Last Ebola Patient Released From Liberian Clinic

There was good news out of Liberia this week. Liberian health officials announced earlier this week that the last confirmed Ebola patient has been discharged from treatment. While many in Liberia are celebrating health officials warn that the Ebola epidemic is still of great concern. Beatrice Yardolo, 58, was discharged from a clinic in Monrovia on Thursday officially closing the last confirmed case of Ebola in Liberia. Officials stated that Liberia cannot be confirmed free of the Ebola virus until 45 days have passed without any new cases. Officials also stated that they are following approximately 100 individuals that were known to be exposed to the virus, but had no confirmation of being infected.

The news in the neighboring countries of Sierra Leone and Guinea was not as encouraging as new cases of the virus continue to be confirmed. Most recently Sierra Leone’s Vice-President, Samuel Sam-Sumana was placed in quarantined when one of his bodyguards’ died from the disease. According to the World Health Organization as of March 2015 there have been more than 25,000 confirmed cases of Ebola and nearly 10,000 deaths linked directly to the virus.

The United Nations health agency confirmed that phase III clinical trials of the Ebola vaccine rVOV-EBOV developed by NewLink Genetics Corp, a small biologics company based in Ames, Iowa, would begin soon in Guinea, specifically, the Basse Guinee region. Phase III clinical trials are the final stage before being presented to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for complete approval. Another Ebola vaccine being produced by GlaxoSmithKline will also soon begin the final stage of clinical trials.

While it is clear that the Ebola virus is still a credible threat in West Africa health officials have made substantial progress against the virus since the outbreak was at its peak one year ago.
