Ebola Continues to Worsen in Sierra Leone Despite Humanitarian Efforts

The Ebola virus continues to make headlines, and as usually the news continues to be grim. Sierra Leone, one of the hardest hit regions of West Africa, continues to be overpowered by the virus. While the news in the neighboring West African country of Liberia has taken a turn for the better, officials believe they have started gain some control on the virus, Ebola still has Sierra Leone tightly in its grips. World Health Organization (WHO) officials state that in November 2014 alone there were more than 1800 new cases of Ebola in Sierra Leone. Officials state this is three times the number of cases seen in Liberia, which until recently had been as overwrought with the virus as Sierra Leone.

The crisis has gotten so bad that International Health Officials are no longer available to sustain enough beds for the ill, and have agreed to help the community care for their sick within their own homes until sufficient hospital beds and facilities can be established. As we have learned so many times over the past six months, Ebola is a horrifying virus that takes no mercy, and is prejudice to none. Missionary healthcare workers like Dr. Kent Brantly, Dr. Richard Sacra, and Nancy Writebol know first hand the nightmare that takes place once the Ebola virus finds its way into the body.

To make matters worse, civil war within the borders of Sierra Leone often complicates the task of trying to treat the ill. Fearing for their own lives many missionary workers have chosen to leave the country, and substantially decreasing the number of individuals available to treat the growing numbers of patients infected with the Ebola virus. Large-scale clinical studies for GlaxoSmithKline’s Ebola vaccine are to begin in Liberia and Sierra Leone next month. Official are holding out hope the vaccine is able to perform as well as early clinical results have shown.
